WHEREAS

The #7 coal boiler at the Virginia Tech Power Plant currently emits 38 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) per year and 33 tons of particulates less than 10 microns diameter (PM-10's) and

WHEREAS

in order to meet current emmisions standards of the 1990 Ammendments to the Clean Air Act, emmisions of SO2 and PM10 from the #7 coal boiler would have to be reduced by approximately 90% and

WHEREAS

SO2 has been proven to be a cause of acid rain and

WHEREAS

according to the American Lung Association airvorne particulates including PM-10s irritate and damage delicate lung tissue and

WHEREAS

Virginia Tech has signed the Talloires Declarations thereby agreeing to "set an example of environmental responsibility" and

WHEREAS

Public service is the highest calling of a land grant university such as Virginia Tech and

WHEREAS

Virginia Tech has not made an official request for funding to voluntarily improve its filtration system, let it be

RESOLVED

That the SGA, on behalf of students, faculty and local residents, request that Virginia Tech make a formal budget reqest to the Virginia State Legislature for funding to improve the filtration system on the #7 boiler to meet current emissions standards.
