Please write your rationale for requesting this alternative assignment in the space below. Provide letter from appropriate mentor that addresses the reason of your objection to dissection. Be sure the letterhead includes their address and phone number.
Alternative Assignment A
No actual dissection of the pig. Pair with another student who is willing
to do all dissection of the pig. Give assistance to person dissecting by
reading directions and explanation out loud as dissection is taking place.
Student is responsible for all class assignments, quizzes, and the pig
practical. Cost of pig to be worked out between partners.
Alternative Assignment B
Write at least a one page narrative per system comparing an animal
assigned for each system to that of the pig. A labeled diagram of the animal
used as comparison to the pig should accompany each system. References
should be cited in the format provided in the example paper provided, and
a reference page submitted with the complete written report. In the comparisons,
stress the differences in each system from that of the pig.
Minimum of 5 written pages, not including the diagrams or references. The respiratory system comparison will be presented orally in class. Provide appropriate visual aids for the presentation. This presentation should be approximately 5-10 minutes in length.
Systems to be covered will include
1. Digestive
2. Skeletal
3. Circulatory
4. Urogenital
5. Respiratory
An example assignment might be:
1. Using a bird, compare in writing the digestive system
of the bird to that of a pig. Please diagram and label the organs of the
digestive system of the bird to compare with that of the pig.
2. Using a frog, compare in writing and diagram the circulatory system
of the frog to the pig.
3. The urogenital system of the iguana (a reptile) will be compared to
that of the pig. One should address the maintanice [sic] of salt and water
balance. Diagram and label the reptile urogenital system.
4. Using a bat, compare the skeletal system of the bat to the pig, highlighting
the variations in these two mammalian organisms. Diagram and label the
major components of the skeletal system of the bat.
5. Using a fish, compare and in writing and diagram the respiratory system
of the fish to that of the pig. This system will be presented by you to
your classmates. Appropriate visual aids should accompany this presentation.
The class will be responsible for and tested on this system during the
pig practical.
