k. d. lang

Shadowland

Rating: **** (4 out of 4)

Availability: Widely available

After last issue's review of the disappointing All You Can Eat, I felt compelled to review this early album of k. d. lang's work. Shadowland: The Owen Bradley Sessions is by far the superior album.

Shadowland is from k. d. lang's country music period, but it's far from most modern country productions. lang opts instead for country standards from the golden age of the genre, such as the rollicking "(Waltz Me) Once Again Around the Dance Floor" and "Western Stars." The velvet voice that would later record the smooth, monotonous songs of All You Can Eat is used expressively throughout the album, with the impressive vocal range made all the more impressive by its emotional range.

The selection of music is impressive, drawing the listener back to the early days of country with beautiful production by Owen Bradley. The Jordanaires provide backup on some tracks, while the "Honky Tonk Angels' Medley" features Brenda Lee, Loretta Lynn, and Kitty Wells.

Shadowland is a well-rounded album from an astounding performer. k. d. lang's voice is fantastic as always, but it is even more fantastic when it is given music that is worth singing. This CD is highly recommended.
