Deep Blue Something is not all that hard to classify. They're rock and roll, pure and simple.
In a way, this is both a good thing and a bad thing. It's good because it's nice to hear more rock and roll music in the world, but it's bad because it makes for a less than memorable musical trip.
The album shows a lot of promise in the first three tracks, the searing instrumental "Gammer Gerten's Needle," the pop love sound of "Breakfast at Tiffany's," and the full-on rock of "Halo," but from there the album takes a downward turn. Deep Blue Something falls from originality into rock convention, resulting in some of the least memorable rock songs that I've ever heard. Except for "Song to Make Love To" and the coarse and unoriginal "Done," very little else stands out on this album. Granted, that's five songs, but that's hardly enough to make an album worthy of purchasing. Five songs is barely even a worthy EP.
Deep Blue Something has an interesting sound, but they have a slight problem. They appear not to know how to trim the fat on an album. As a result, otherwise brilliant material is bogged down by plain frat rock with no purpose. This album is a fairly good attempt, but not that good.
